Gendarmerie Vehicle Equipment: Technology, Safety and Field Performance

Every gendarmerie vehicle carries a range of technical equipment that transforms a standard car into an operational tool capable of carrying out surveillance, interception and public-order missions. This equipment directly affects the safety of officers and the effectiveness of every intervention in the field.

Compliance for onboard data: a strict legal framework

Have you ever noticed the cameras or digital terminals inside gendarmerie vehicles? These devices are more than just gadgets. They capture, process and sometimes store personal data, which means they are subject to a strict regulatory framework. An overview of gendarmerie vehicle equipment helps illustrate the range of systems involved.

Article R. 242-14 of the Internal Security Code requires a compliance undertaking to be submitted to the CNIL for certain data processing operations carried out by the gendarmerie. In practice, every onboard system that records images, license plates or information related to an intervention must comply with specific rules governing data retention and access.

Article 52 of the Act of 25 May 2021 on global security that preserves freedoms is another key reference. It governs data processing by security forces and creates an ongoing tension between surveillance capabilities and the protection of individual freedoms.

Non-compliant digital equipment can be taken out of service. Technological performance alone is not enough: every sensor and terminal must be part of a legally approved system before deployment.

Centaure: the versatile armoured vehicle of the mobile gendarmerie

The Centaure programme marks the most significant renewal of the gendarmerie’s armoured fleet since the VBRG entered service nearly five decades ago. Designed by Soframe, a subsidiary of Lohr, this versatile intervention vehicle has been deployed since 2022 with several units, including the Mobile Gendarmerie Armoured Group at Versailles-Satory and certain GIGN branches.

Protection and mobility capabilities

The Centaure carries ten personnel (three operators and seven passengers). Its armour meets STANAG 4569 Level 2, providing protection against 7.62 mm calibre bullets, mines and shrapnel. For a public-order vehicle, this level of protection makes a real difference during operations in high-risk areas.

In terms of mobility, its six-cylinder engine produces 330 horsepower, with a combat weight of 14.5 tonnes. It can reach 100 km/h on roads and tackle gradients of up to 40%. These capabilities allow the Centaure to operate in both urban environments and rough terrain.

A programme for 90 vehicles, continually evolving

The programme provides for the delivery of 90 armoured vehicles. Its initial funding came from the recovery plan launched in 2021. Each new delivery includes training and maintenance adaptations, because a modern armoured vehicle requires specialised mechanical and digital skills.

Fleet renewal: the real impact of a pause

Renewal of the gendarmerie’s vehicle fleet does not follow a regular schedule. An article published by Acteurs publics in October 2026 reports that the lack of vehicle renewals for police and gendarmerie services in 2024 created a significant disparity with 2025.

Why does this matter? When renewals stop, the average age of the fleet inevitably rises. Ageing vehicles suffer more breakdowns and reduce operational availability. Rural units, which cover long distances every day, are the first to be affected.

The resumption of deliveries in 2025 helped partially make up for the delay, but the gap between units recently equipped with new vehicles and those still using older equipment remains a source of logistical strain.

Field equipment in patrol vehicles

Beyond armoured vehicles, most gendarmerie missions rely on patrol vehicles equipped for routine surveillance and emergency response. The fleet includes a range of models suited to different situations.

  • The Ford Ranger 3, a four-wheel-drive pickup with a 214-horsepower diesel engine, is widely used overseas and on difficult terrain thanks to its generous dimensions (5.35 m long).
  • Rapid response vehicles, successors to the rapid-response units established in 1967, are used to intercept vehicles on major roads. Recent models such as the Alpine A110 Pure and Seat León Cupra 290 combine power with agility.
  • Vans and panel vans transport personnel and equipment during public-order operations and site-security missions.

Each vehicle category is equipped with light bars, secure communication systems and terminals for accessing databases. This equipment turns a civilian vehicle into a mobile command post that can communicate with control centres in real time.

Engine performance and adaptation to operational use

Gendarmerie vehicles face demands that civilian models do not. Repeated starts, extended idling with all electrical systems running, and rapid acceleration during interventions put far greater strain on the engine and transmission than standard driving.

Power alone does not make a good service vehicle. Mechanical reliability, battery capacity for powering onboard equipment and suspension durability are just as important as horsepower. That is why the gendarmerie selects models based on their durability under intensive use, not just their straight-line performance.

The choice between combustion engines and newer alternatives still depends on the availability of charging infrastructure across the country, particularly in rural areas where the gendarmerie carries out most of its security missions.
