Follow requests sent on Instagram to private accounts do not have a visible summary in the app. To find the complete list of these pending requests, the only reliable method is through the data export offered by Meta. This process, seemingly simple, involves several variables that directly influence the result obtained: file format, selected period, generation time.
Instagram Data Export: HTML or JSON Depending on Use
Two formats are offered during the export. The choice between the two alters the readability and processing possibilities of the received file.
| Criterion | HTML Format | JSON Format |
|---|---|---|
| Consultation | Directly in a browser, without additional tools | Requires a text editor, spreadsheet, or script |
| Visual Readability | Structured layout, clickable links | Raw data, not easily readable without processing |
| Automated Processing | Limited | Suitable for sorting in a spreadsheet or analysis by script |
| Main Use Case | Occasional manual verification | List comparison, tracking over time |
For a quick consultation of your pending requests, the HTML format is sufficient in most cases. The JSON format becomes relevant if you manage multiple accounts or if you want to cross-reference the data with an existing subscription file.
A detailed guide allows you to see my follow requests on Instagram by following each step of the export process from the Meta settings.

Sent Follow Requests: Export Procedure from Account Space
The section dedicated to sent requests is found in Meta’s centralized settings, not in the standard Instagram settings. The access path varies depending on the version of the app installed.
Accessing Your Information Download
From the Instagram app, open your profile, then go to settings. Look for the section named “Account Space” (or “Account Center” in some versions).
- Select “Your Information and Permissions,” then “Download or Export Your Information” (the exact wording may differ depending on the update)
- Choose the relevant Instagram account if multiple accounts are linked to your Meta space
- In the data categories, check “Followers and Following” to limit the export to relevant information
- Select the period “Since the Beginning” to obtain the complete list of requests, including the oldest ones
The section that contains pending requests usually appears under the name pending_follow_requests in the generated file. It lists the usernames to whom a request has been sent without a response.
Why Menu Names Change from Device to Device
Meta rolls out its interface updates gradually. The same account may display “Export Your Information” on one phone and “Download Your Information” on another. Both phrases lead to the same export tool. If a tutorial does not match what you see, the feature exists under a slightly different title.
Receiving Time and Limits of Instagram Export
The export is not instantaneous. Preparing the file usually takes a few minutes but can extend to several hours depending on the account’s data volume. Instagram sends a notification or an email when the file is ready.
Several limits deserve attention. The export provides a frozen snapshot: a request accepted between the export and the consultation will no longer appear in the list of pending requests. The file does not specify the date each request was sent, complicating chronological sorting.

However, the export remains the only comprehensive source. The app itself does not offer a dedicated page for sent requests. Some users try to find these requests by manually browsing the private profiles they remember sending a request to, but this approach only covers a fraction of the actual requests.
Canceling a Pending Follow Request on Instagram
Once the list of pending requests is identified via the export, cancellation is done directly in the app. Go to the profile of the relevant account: if the request is still pending, the button displays “Requested.”
Press this button to cancel the request. The targeted account does not receive any cancellation notification. This action is silent, allowing you to clean up your list without visible consequences for the other user.
Cancellation is useful in several cases: inactive accounts that will never respond, requests sent by mistake, or the desire to limit the number of pending requests for profile security reasons. A large number of unaccepted requests can also be interpreted by the algorithm as atypical behavior.
Account Security and Sent Follow Requests
The data export contains sensitive information: usernames, login history, associated posts. Store the downloaded file in a secure location and delete it after consultation if you no longer need it.
Also, ensure that the email address associated with your account is up to date before initiating the export. Meta sends the download link to this address, and a compromised access to your email would give access to all your exported data.
Regularly managing your sent follow requests on Instagram, combined with occasional exports, provides a clear view of your pending subscription network. The export file remains the only reliable tool to obtain this information comprehensively.
